Where the Munchkin Cat Comes From
Cats with short legs have appeared in various countries over many years. There was a line of short-legged cats recorded in the UK back in 1944, but it died out during the Second World War. The specific breed we know today started in 1983 when a woman named Sandra Hochenedel found a pregnant short-legged cat, which she used as the foundation for the breed. A male kitten from that litter was kept, and the breed grew from those two cats. TICA (The International Cat Association) started developing the breed in 1994 and officially granted the Munchkin championship status in 2003.

How to Care for a Munchkin in Malaysia
Munchkins do well in Malaysia, as long as they live indoors. Our heat and humidity can be hard on them, so keep them in an air-conditioned or well-ventilated room to avoid heat exhaustion. Grooming depends on the coat. Longhaired Munchkins need brushing three to four times a week, because the humidity makes their fur mat and tangle quickly. Shorthaired Munchkins are easier and only need a quick brush once a week. Clean the litter box more often than you would for other cats. Their bellies are low to the ground, so litter and mess stick to their fur easily.

Frequently Asked Questions
Many people worry about this, but Munchkins actually have a different spinal structure than short-legged dogs like Corgis. As long as they are bred responsibly and kept at a healthy weight to avoid extra stress on their joints, they generally live long, healthy lives without severe back issues.
Yes. Because of their size and indoor lifestyle, Munchkins are perfect for apartments and condos. They are active and playful, but they do not need massive amounts of vertical space to be happy.
